Morning in Jerome, AZ
Jerome, Arizona is a small ghost town about 100 miles north of Phoenix overlooking the Verde Valley. In it’s heyday, the late 19th and early 20th centuries, over 15,000 people lived in Jerome and most worked in the copper mines in the nearby mountains. These copper mines were considered among the richest ever found. The the copper ran out and the town dwindled down to as few as 100 people and now is home to about 400 artists and residents. Like all mining towns, it was full of saloons, brothels and booming business catering to the miners. A nearby hospital served the miners but not without it’s own reputation. Nearly one death per day occurred at the hotel and was eventually unoccupied for nearly 50 years and is now a “haunted” hotel. That and the adjacent insane asylum have been featured on many ghost stories such as Ghost Adventures in Travel Channel.
